The Worse the Weather, the Better the Photography

This Saturday morning there was rain. Part of me didn’t want to go out. Wouldn’t I rather be under a blanket, watching some brainless sci-fi whatever on Netflix? But I was inspired by the encouragement of another photographer’s advice, that the best time to be out is when everyone else is choosing to stay in. If you are cold, wet, tired, … these are the emotions that generate good photography. If the light is flat, or it’s dark, then this is when we get to be creative. Any jerk can take a good photo when the sky is aflame with morning sunrise light, or dramatic storm clouds blowing in. But these photos here are moody. The fog is perfect for creating separation and subtle variations of dark and light. These are the conditions for layering of color and detail.

And here are a few experiments in black and white from the same set.
